Prescriptions & Pharmacy

As an RCVS approved veterinary practice, we are able to stock, store and prescribe medications for animals. We have a fully stocked pharmacy and endeavour to keep a good stock of medication.

If you would like to request a repeat prescription for a medication that your pet is currently taking, or for a prescription diet, please contact the practice or make an online request.

We usually ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for any prescriptions, as all prescriptions must be authorised by a veterinary surgeon.

Please be aware that there are limits on the length of time for which we are able to prescribe, and the prescription length will depend on the type of medication, the current treatment plan, the response of your pet to the current treatment, and sometimes the availability of recent blood test results.

For those patients on continual medication, a veterinary surgeon must recheck the patient at regular intervals (and this applies for prescription-only routine parasite treatment too). This is a legal requirement, as vets in the UK can only dispense or prescribe medication following a clinical assessment of the patient. In most cases, clinical reassessments are done every three or six months. The frequency of this may seem excessive to some clients, but please remember that, in terms of body ageing, one year in a dog’s or cat’s life is equivalent to approximately seven in a human life, so rechecks every three months equate to a doctor checking a human patient for ongoing medication every two years or so.

For flea and worm treatment, as long as your pet is seen by us for a health and weight check at least once every 12 months (the annual booster can count for this) and is a stable weight, we are usually happy to prescribe for up to 12 months. We will usually require that young, growing animals visit more regularly for a weight check until they reach a stable weight, in order to ensure they are having the correct dosage.
